Dubai has one of the world's most reliable taxi systems — RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) metered white cabs are clean, air-conditioned, metered, and plentiful. Careem (Uber's Middle East subsidiary) offers app-based booking with upfront pricing. Both are excellent; the choice depends on your situation.
Dubai taxis and Careem do not require tipping — it's not part of UAE taxi culture. Round up to the nearest dirham if you want to acknowledge good service, but this is entirely optional and not expected by drivers.
Is Careem the same as Uber in Dubai?
Since Uber acquired Careem in 2019, both apps operate as the same service in the UAE. The Careem app is the dominant local brand and has more features (scheduled rides, cash payment option) in the UAE market. You can use either app — they connect to the same driver pool.
How much does a taxi cost from Dubai Mall to the airport?
DXB Terminal 1/3: AED 40–55 via Careem or metered RTA taxi (plus AED 20 airport drop-off surcharge). Journey time: 15–20 minutes with light traffic, 30–45 minutes during peak hour on Sheikh Zayed Road. Al Maktoum Airport (DWC) is 40km further — budget AED 120–160.
