Narita taxis to Tokyo are eye-wateringly expensive. Haneda is much better. Here's what each costs and the smarter alternatives.
Tokyo is served by two main international airports with completely different taxi economics. Narita (NRT) is 60โ80 km from central Tokyo โ a taxi there costs JPY 20,000โ30,000 and is almost never the right choice. Haneda (HND) is just 15โ20 km from the city centre โ a taxi costs JPY 4,000โ8,000 and is genuinely practical, particularly late at night. If you know which airport you are arriving at and which transport mode suits, you will navigate Tokyo's airport connections without overpaying or wasting time.

At JPY 20,000โ30,000 for a taxi to central Tokyo, Narita is one of the most expensive airport taxi journeys in the world. The Narita Express (N'EX) covers the same distance in under an hour for JPY 3,070 and is comfortable, fast, and reliable. The Keisei Skyliner is even faster to Ueno (36 minutes, JPY 2,570). The only situations where a Narita taxi makes sense: a large group of 4+ splitting the fare, extreme luggage that cannot be managed on trains, or a hotel in a remote location with no practical train connection. For everyone else, the train is the clear choice.
Haneda's proximity to the city makes taxis genuinely reasonable. JPY 4,000โ7,000 to Shibuya, Shinjuku, or Ginza is a fair price for a direct, comfortable ride. After midnight when the monorail and Keikyu trains stop running, taxis are often the most convenient option. Japanese taxis are impeccably maintained โ the vehicles are spotless, drivers are professional and precise, and the meter is always used. There are no scams, no unlicensed touts, and no negotiation required.
Japanese taxi doors open and close automatically โ do not touch the passenger door. The driver operates it with a lever from the dashboard. Reaching for the handle is a very common mistake among visitors. Wait for the door to open when the taxi stops, and do not try to close it yourself when exiting.

Yes โ "taxi sharing" services are available at Narita for passengers going to similar destinations, which can reduce the per-person cost significantly. Ask at the taxi information counter near the taxi rank in arrivals.
