Licensed Rome taxis are always white (bianco) and show a "TAXI" illuminated sign on the roof. The meter starts running from the moment you get in — there is no charge for the driver coming to collect you for a street hail. Journeys have three tariff bands: daytime (7 am–10 pm weekdays), night (10 pm–7 am), and Sunday/holiday. Each band has a different flag fall charge. Rome Taxi Scams to Avoid
Fiumicino Airport is one of Europe's worst hotspots for unlicensed taxi touts. Drivers approach travellers inside the terminal, claim to be official taxis, and quote €80–120 for a trip that should cost €50 on the flat rate. Never accept a ride from anyone who approaches you inside the arrivals hall. The official taxi rank is outside the terminal exit — look for the white cars in the marked queue.

- •Running the meter on an airport trip — the flat rate is mandatory from FCO/CIA. Insist on the fixed fare.

- •"Scenic" detour through the ring road — for FCO trips, the route should go via the A91 motorway directly into the city.
