Bali Airport taxis are fixed-price, not metered — and Grab is banned from the terminal. Here's what to pay and how to avoid the common traps.
Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar serves all of Bali — and the taxi situation here is unlike any other major Asian airport. There are no metered taxis operating from the arrivals terminal. Instead, a fixed-price system is operated by the Bali Taxi Cooperative (Koperasi Angkutan Bali/Kosti Bali), where you pay a set rate based on your destination before boarding. App-based taxis (Grab, Gojek) are banned from the airport pickup zone by the taxi cooperative — you must walk outside the airport grounds to use them. Knowing this in advance saves confusion, and knowing the correct fixed prices helps you pay fair rather than the inflated rates some touts quote.

Inside the arrivals hall at DPS, you will see a taxi counter run by the Bali Taxi Cooperative (look for the "Official Taxi" or "Kosti Bali" booth). State your destination, pay the fixed rate, and receive a receipt and a voucher. Take the voucher outside to the taxi rank — a coordinator matches you with a vehicle. The driver takes the voucher and you owe nothing further at the end of the journey (tip excluded). Prices at the official counter are regulated and reasonable — the higher quotes you may receive from drivers approaching you before you reach the counter are unofficial and should be declined.
Grab and Gojek are not permitted to pick up inside the DPS arrivals zone. This is enforced by the taxi cooperative and is a commercial arrangement that benefits the cooperative drivers. However, you can walk approximately 500 metres to the public road outside the airport perimeter — follow the footpath past the car park exit gates — and book a Grab or Gojek from there. Grab fares from the public road to most Seminyak or Kuta hotels are IDR 60,000–100,000, noticeably cheaper than the official counter. The trade-off is the 10-minute walk in Bali's heat with your luggage.
The area outside DPS arrivals is an active zone for unofficial taxi touts who approach travellers with handwritten signs and quoted prices often 2–4× the official rate. Never accept a transport offer from someone who approaches you before you reach the official counter. If you want a regulated fixed-price taxi, use the Kosti Bali counter. If you want an app-based ride, walk to the public road and book via Grab.
How much is a taxi from Bali Airport to Seminyak?
IDR 100,000–140,000 via the official Kosti Bali fixed-price counter — approximately $6–9 USD. Grab from the public road outside the airport is IDR 75,000–110,000. Journey time is 20–40 minutes depending on traffic.
How much is a taxi from Bali Airport to Ubud?
IDR 250,000–400,000 (approximately $15–25 USD) depending on the operator. Ubud is 35–40km from the airport and takes 60–90 minutes. Grab from the public road is IDR 230,000–350,000. The official counter price is regulated and fair.
Why can't I use Grab at Bali Airport?
App-based taxis (Grab, Gojek) are prohibited from the arrivals pickup zone by the Bali Taxi Cooperative. This is an enforced commercial arrangement. You can walk 500 metres to the public road and book from there. For most travellers, the convenience of the official counter is worth the modest price difference.
How long does it take to get from Bali Airport to Kuta?
Kuta is only 2–5km from DPS — approximately 15–25 minutes in normal conditions. During Bali's notorious traffic peak hours (8–10am, 4–7pm), Kuta can take 35–50 minutes due to the congestion around Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai.
Are there metered taxis at Bali Airport?
No metered taxis operate from the DPS arrivals zone. The official system is fixed-price pre-payment. Blue Bird (Bali's most reputable metered taxi company) can be booked via the MyBluebird app for pickup at the public road outside the terminal.
Is it safe to take an unofficial taxi in Bali?
Unofficial taxis (touts) in Bali are not unsafe in terms of personal safety, but you will almost certainly be overcharged significantly. Stick to the official Kosti Bali counter, Blue Bird app bookings, or Grab/Gojek from the public road — all provide fair, predictable fares.
