Istanbul's new airport is 35–45km from the city centre. Here's what taxis cost, what to watch for, and the faster alternatives.
Istanbul Airport (IST), which replaced Atatürk Airport in 2019, is located on the European side of Istanbul's northwestern suburbs — approximately 35–45km from Sultanahmet (the historic Old City) and Taksim Square. Taxis from IST are plentiful and metered, but Turkey's rapid inflation means fares shift frequently; the numbers in this guide reflect 2026 rates. The journey to the city centre takes 45–75 minutes depending on traffic, with Istanbul's notorious congestion meaning peak-hour journeys can stretch to 90 minutes or more. For budget-conscious travellers, the Havaist airport bus service provides a reliable, comfortable, and far cheaper alternative.

The taxi rank at IST is on the ground floor of the International Arrivals hall — follow signs for "Taxi / Taksi." Only take yellow metered taxis from the official rank. Ensure the meter is running before the car moves — the driver must start the meter at the beginning of the journey. Taxis to the Asian side of Istanbul cross the Bosphorus via the 15 Temmuz Şehitler Bridge (15 July Martyrs Bridge, formerly Bosphorus Bridge) or the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge; bridge tolls are paid by the passenger and added to the total fare.
Be wary of taxi drivers who quote a fixed price rather than using the meter, particularly for journeys to major tourist areas (Sultanahmet, Taksim). Fixed quotes are almost always significantly higher than the metered rate. Insist on the meter — "Sayaç lütfen" (SAH-yach loot-fen) means "Meter please" in Turkish. If a driver refuses to use the meter, exit the vehicle and join the official queue.
How much is a taxi from Istanbul Airport to Taksim?
Approximately ₺1,880–2,200 for the 40km daytime journey. Night fares (midnight–6am) are 50% higher. At current exchange rates (~38 TRY/USD), this is approximately $50–58 USD — similar to a Western European airport taxi.
How far is the new Istanbul Airport from the city centre?
35km to Beşiktaş, 40km to Taksim, 45km to Sultanahmet (Old City). The old Atatürk Airport was much closer (15–20km). IST's distance is why the Havaist bus and the M11 metro are worth considering.
What is the airport bus to Istanbul and how much does it cost?
Havaist buses (IETT) run from IST to multiple city destinations. H1 to Taksim runs 24 hours and costs ₺100–180 (under $5 USD). Allow 60–90 minutes depending on traffic — usually faster late at night.
How long does the taxi take from Istanbul Airport to the city?
45–65 minutes to Taksim or Sultanahmet in normal conditions. During Istanbul's severe rush hours (8–10am and 5–8pm weekdays), the journey can extend to 90–120 minutes. The O-7 highway from the airport is often congested. Late-night arrivals are typically 35–50 minutes.
Is there a metro from Istanbul Airport?
Yes — the M11 line connects IST directly to Gayrettepe station, where it connects to M2 (for Taksim and the Bosphorus area). The M11 opened in 2023 and is a major improvement in airport access. Journey time is approximately 35–40 minutes to Gayrettepe, then another 10–15 minutes on M2.
Do I tip taxi drivers in Istanbul?
Tipping taxi drivers is not expected in Turkey. Pay the metered amount and nothing further is required. If a driver provides genuinely helpful service (carrying heavy luggage, navigating complex routes), rounding up by ₺50–100 is a kind gesture — but tipping is not obligatory.
