HKG taxis come in three colours with different zones — and tunnel charges add significantly to the fare. Here's the full breakdown.
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA / HKG) sits on Lantau Island, separated from the main urban areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island by water and expressway. The taxi system is clean, metered, and regulated by the Transport Department — but the fare structure catches many visitors off guard: three taxi colours operate different zones, tunnel surcharges add significantly to cross-harbour journeys, and the full airport-to-Central fare can reach HK$450 with tunnel tolls included. The Airport Express train (24 minutes, HK$115) remains the most popular alternative, but for groups or heavy luggage, taxis are often the more practical choice.

At HKG you will only have access to red urban taxis (for Kowloon and Hong Kong Island destinations) and, for Lantau-only trips, yellow taxis. Do not enter a green taxi at the airport if your destination is Kowloon or HK Island — green taxis are restricted to the New Territories and cannot enter urban zones. Red taxis are the correct choice for all major tourist destinations. They queue at the designated taxi rank on the ground floor of the passenger terminal — follow signs for "Taxi" from arrivals.
The most common source of sticker shock in Hong Kong taxis is the tunnel surcharge. If your destination is on Hong Kong Island (Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, etc.), the driver must pass through the Cross-Harbour Tunnel (CHT). The toll is HK$110 — paid by the driver at the booth, but the full amount is added to your fare. You pay the meter fare plus the tunnel toll, and in some tunnels, the driver may also add the return toll (HK$110 again), making the total tunnel addition HK$220. This is legal and printed on the tariff card in all taxis — it is not a scam, though it is startlingly high for a tunnel crossing.
For destinations in Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Jordan), a taxi is genuinely competitive with the Airport Express — HK$280–340 split between two or three people is not much more than HK$105–115 per person each. For Hong Kong Island destinations, the tunnel toll pushes taxi costs high enough that the Airport Express is usually the better choice for individuals or pairs.
How much is a taxi from Hong Kong Airport to Central?
Approximately HK$380–450 all-in. This includes the metered fare for the 50km journey plus the mandatory Cross-Harbour Tunnel toll of HK$110 (and in some cases a return toll). The Airport Express (HK$115) is significantly cheaper for solo travellers and pairs.
Why did my Hong Kong taxi fare include a HK$110 or HK$220 tunnel charge?
The Cross-Harbour Tunnel toll is HK$110. In most cases, the driver adds HK$110 (the one-way toll they pay). Some tunnels also entitle the driver to add the return journey toll — up to HK$220 total. This is legal and printed on the tariff notice inside the cab. It is not a scam.
What colour taxi should I take at Hong Kong Airport?
Red taxis for all urban destinations (Kowloon and Hong Kong Island). Yellow taxis are only for Lantau Island destinations (e.g., Tung Chung, Disneyland). Do not enter a green taxi — they are restricted to the New Territories and cannot take you to city destinations.
Is the Airport Express faster than a taxi from HKG?
Yes — 24 minutes by Airport Express to Central versus 45–75 minutes by taxi depending on traffic. For time-sensitive arrivals, the Airport Express is always faster and never gets stuck in the expressway congestion that can affect taxis during peak hours.
Do Hong Kong taxis have an airport surcharge?
No separate airport surcharge — the meter runs from the pickup point. However, if you take a taxi back to the airport, there is an airport tunnel toll payable. Always ensure the meter is running from the moment you depart the taxi rank.
Can I pay by card in Hong Kong taxis?
Some taxis accept Octopus card or credit card — look for signage in the window. Many still prefer cash (HKD). Have HKD ready, particularly for the tunnel toll portion which is sometimes collected separately at the booth. ATMs are available in the arrivals hall before you reach the taxi rank.
