Barcelona airport taxis use the meter — here's what to expect, typical fares, and how to avoid the common overcharges.
Taxis from Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) to the city centre are metered, yellow-and-black, and well-regulated by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area authority. The typical fare to central Barcelona — Las Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter, Eixample, or Gràcia — runs €30–45 including the mandatory airport supplement. The journey takes 20–40 minutes. Barcelona taxis are generally honest, but a handful of specific supplements confuse visitors, and a minority of drivers exploit that confusion. Knowing what is legitimate and what is not will make the difference.

Barcelona's taxi supplement system is transparent but easy to misunderstand. The €4.20 airport supplement is mandatory and legitimate — it will appear on the meter display, usually as "S" or "Suplement" at the start of the journey. The luggage supplement (€1.10 per large piece) is also legitimate but only applies to bags over 55cm in any dimension — standard carry-on sized bags should not incur a charge. The night rate (Tariff 2) applies from 9pm to 7am and on weekends/holidays — you will see "T2" on the meter display. These are genuine official supplements. Any other charges not explained by the driver before departure are worth querying.
Barcelona taxis are yellow and black — distinctive and easy to identify. The official taxi rank at Terminal 1 is outside the arrivals exit (follow signs). Terminal 2 has its own rank directly outside the arrivals hall. Both are well-lit and staffed at busy times. The meter starts at €2.15 (day) or €2.35 (night) — confirm it is running before the car moves. Uber and Cabify also operate at El Prat from designated pick-up zones and offer upfront pricing.
For groups of 3 or more, the taxi becomes very competitive with the Aerobús. Three passengers splitting €38 pay €12.70 each — less than the Aerobús and door-to-door. Four passengers make it even better value. Solo travellers: the Aerobús at €6.75 is an excellent deal.
How much is a taxi from Barcelona airport to the city?
€30–45 all-in for daytime travel to the city centre, including the €4.20 airport supplement and any luggage charges. Night fares (9pm–7am) run €38–55.
How long does the taxi take from El Prat to Barcelona?
20–35 minutes in light traffic. During morning and evening peak hours (8–9:30am, 6–8pm), allow 45–60 minutes.
Are Barcelona taxis reliable?
Generally yes — most use the meter correctly and the supplement structure is official. The yellow-and-black colour, working meter, and willingness to show the fare on the display are all good signs. Decline any driver who quotes a "fixed price" significantly above the typical range.
Is there a direct train from El Prat to Barcelona?
Yes — from Terminal 2 only, the Renfe R2 Nord train runs to Sants and Passeig de Gràcia in about 20 minutes for €4.60. Terminal 1 has no direct train; use the free shuttle bus to T2 or take the Aerobús.
What is the Aerobús and is it better than a taxi?
The Aerobús is a direct coach service from both terminals to Plaça Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, and Sants for €6.75. It runs every 5–10 minutes. For solo travellers or couples without heavy luggage, it is the best-value option. Taxis are better for groups or those with large bags.
Is Uber available at Barcelona airport?
Yes — Uber and Cabify both operate at El Prat from designated ride-hailing pick-up zones. Fares are upfront and typically €28–45 to the city centre, comparable to taxis with slightly less meter uncertainty.
