Fiumicino Airport to central Rome is a fixed €50; Ciampino is €30 — both all-inclusive, no extras. Here's the full 2026 metered-fare breakdown for getting around the city, and how unlicensed drivers try to inflate that flat rate.
Rome taxis are metered and regulated by the municipality — but the city has some of Europe's most persistent overcharging problems. Mandatory fixed fares from Fiumicino and Ciampino airports were introduced to combat scams, but unlicensed drivers and inflated "extras" remain common. Here's exactly what you should pay for every major route in Rome in 2026.

Licensed Rome taxis are always white (bianco) and show a "TAXI" illuminated sign on the roof. The meter starts running from the moment you get in — there is no charge for the driver coming to collect you for a street hail. Journeys have three tariff bands: daytime (7 am–10 pm weekdays), night (10 pm–7 am), and Sunday/holiday. Each band has a different flag fall charge. For airport journeys and selected rail terminals, fixed all-inclusive rates apply regardless of the meter.
Rome municipality mandates flat fares for the two main airports and Roma Termini. These are all-inclusive — luggage, multiple passengers, and tolls are included in the flat rate. No extras should be added.
The €50 Fiumicino flat fare applies to any destination within the Aurelian Walls — this includes the Vatican, Trastevere, and all the historic centre. It does NOT apply if your hotel is outside the walls (e.g. EUR district, Prati neighbourhood beyond the walls). In those cases the meter applies from the airport.
Uber operates in Rome as a licensed VTC (private hire vehicle) service — it is legal but significantly smaller than traditional taxis. The itTaxi and FREE NOW apps connect you to licensed white taxis with metered fares, making them the most convenient way to book a legitimate cab without hailing on the street. Bolt does not currently operate in Rome.
Fiumicino Airport is one of Europe's worst hotspots for unlicensed taxi touts. Drivers approach travellers inside the terminal, claim to be official taxis, and quote €80–120 for a trip that should cost €50 on the flat rate. Never accept a ride from anyone who approaches you inside the arrivals hall. The official taxi rank is outside the terminal exit — look for the white cars in the marked queue.
Tipping taxi drivers is not expected in Italy. Most Romans round up to the nearest euro or add €1–2 for particularly helpful service (helping with heavy luggage, navigating difficult pick-up spots). For airport runs or late-night trips, a small tip is appreciated but never assumed.
How much is a taxi from Fiumicino Airport to Rome city centre?
The mandatory fixed fare is €50 for any destination within the Aurelian Walls (the historic city centre including Vatican, Trastevere, Testaccio). The fare is all-inclusive — no extras for luggage or passengers. For destinations outside the walls, the meter applies.
How much is a taxi from Ciampino Airport to Rome?
The fixed fare from Ciampino (CIA) to within the Aurelian Walls is €30. This is all-inclusive. Ciampino serves mainly budget airlines (Ryanair, easyJet). The official taxi rank is outside the arrivals exit.
How do I book a taxi in Rome?
Use the itTaxi app (official city taxi app), FREE NOW, or call 06-0609 (city taxi booking line). At the airports, use the official taxi rank — white cars only. Do not accept rides from drivers who approach you.
Are Rome taxis metered?
Yes — all licensed Rome taxis use a taximeter. The meter starts when you get in. Fixed flat rates apply for airport journeys (FCO →€50, CIA →€30 within the Walls). If a driver quotes a flat rate higher than these for an airport trip, or refuses to use the meter for a city trip, refuse the ride.
Is Uber legal in Rome?
Yes. Uber VTC (licensed private hire) is legal in Rome. However, the standard Uber Pop (non-professional driver) model is banned in Italy. UberX in Rome uses licensed professional drivers. itTaxi and FREE NOW are generally more cost-effective for city trips.
Should I tip taxi drivers in Rome?
Tipping is not expected. Rounding up to the nearest euro is common and appreciated. For longer trips or exceptional service, adding €1–2 is a generous gesture. Tipping €5 or more on a short city trip is unnecessary.
